We use digitization to enable the experience of shared memories at any time and regardless of location. The digital grave is an integral part of each of our grave sites.

A company with a history

The Vienna cemeteries have been an integral part of the cityscape for almost 120 years. Its history begins in 1902. The Vienna cemeteries were founded that year under the name “Municipality of Vienna – Municipal Department 10 – Municipal Cemeteries”. Until 1939 the name of the magistrate changed several times. During the Second World War, the administrative unit also changed. From 1946 the Viennese cemeteries corresponded to the municipal department 43. At the end of 2007 they were spun off from the city administration and Friedhöfe Wien GmbH was founded on January 1, 2008 as a group company of Wiener Stadtwerke Holding AG. Within the Wiener Stadtwerke, they have been a subsidiary of B&F Wien – Bestattung und Friedhöfe GmbH since July 1, 2010.

Cemeteries in Vienna

There are 55 cemeteries in Vienna. The Vienna cemeteries are responsible for 46 interdenominational burial sites. The Vienna Central Cemetery is the second largest cemetery in Europe with its 2.5 km². The park landscape with impressive flora and fauna represents a place of relaxation and reflection. Vienna’s most important cemetery is the final resting place for people of all religions. Due to its many honorary graves, it is one of the most visited sights in the city of Vienna.
The remaining nine cemeteries in Vienna are denominational burial sites: three Catholic, two Protestant, one Islamic and three Israelite cemeteries.

Grave sites
