“We have a very large pile of paper to work through,” explains the stressed head of the health department in Aichach responsible for processing, Kirsten Höper. She only answers the question of an exact number when asked by the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation and after taking a deep breath: “Over 100.”
Unresolved cases since the corona outbreak in November
There are more than 100 corona infections that have accumulated in Friedberg Hospital since November 11, 2020 and the path and course of the infection must now be clarified. More than 100 cases in which it is still unclear whether the patients were already hospitalized with Corona or whether they were infected with the virus there.
Clinic managing director: “Did our homework”
The number given by Höper wants Dr. Hubert Mayer did not confirm. He is the managing director of the clinic group Kliniken an der Paar, which also includes the Friedberg Hospital, and is visibly irritated: “The processing continues, we have done our homework. I cannot understand the number mentioned in the form. We have responded to it agreed not to give any numbers and at least I want to stick to that. “
Employees and patients infected with corona
Mayer does not want to confirm the number, but according to Kirsten Höper he should know: “Well, I have sent these cases to the clinic so that we are on the same level of knowledge. These are cases that are either employees or people in the Were clinic and either in the clinic or after being in the clinic got positive. ” The infections in employees and patients should be roughly balanced.
The number of deaths remains unclear
So far, it remains unclear how many of those infected in the hospital ultimately died of or with corona. In the past week, the BR had reported at least three cases in which patients had died after they were possibly infected with corona in Friedberg Hospital. The health department and clinic management only want to comment on this in their final report.
Location in Friedberg relaxes
In the Friedberg Hospital, however, the situation seems to have calmed down after the massive corona outbreak. According to the head of the health department, Höper, “the number of positive cases has decreased positively”. After the series tests last week, only one further corona case occurred. However, there are currently no positive or suspected cases in Friedberg.
Employees are tested for Corona daily
The daily rapid tests will still be continued at least until the middle of next week, even if, according to Mayer, they led to a “test ping-pong” of false-positive rapid tests and then negative PCR tests “. Nine of his employees have been tested positive in this way in the past few days, initially positive by rapid test, but then again negative by PCR test. In addition to the problem of the duty roster design, this could also have severe consequences for the psyche of the employees.
Intensive care units are still almost full
The strain is still enormous, especially in the intensive care units. The intensive care unit in Friedberg is almost full, the one in Aichach is even filled to the last place. Five corona patients are currently ventilated here around the clock. “The staff in the intensive care unit has been working at full capacity since the beginning of October,” says Mayer, and two employees have since given notice “out of fear of infections”.
Bundeswehr supports at the Aichach hospital
Since two other employees are not allowed to be deployed due to pregnancy and others are ill, the Bundeswehr district liaison command was contacted last week. The free labor market is currently “swept clean”, said Mayer. Three trained paramedics from the Bundeswehr started their service in Aichach on Wednesday. They should be used in the intensive care unit after their qualifications have been checked.
Management protects hospital employees
The managing director of the clinics at the Paar expressly protects the hospital staff. They would have had to get used to new work processes in a very short time, for example they were only allowed to take breaks alone and in fixed time windows.
The term “hygiene error” in connection with the processing of the previous corona cases is therefore incorrect: “Accusing the employees of errors now because this disease calls for new behavior does not do the employees justice. I want to protect my employees there too.” , says Mayer.
Final report is a long time coming
The failures in processing the more than 100 unexplained courses of infection in the hospital in Friedberg are still in the room. And office manager Höper is visibly annoyed when asked about a time frame: “At the beginning I said three weeks and had to say last week that we cannot keep this noble goal. So it’s our turn and I think it is foreseeable Time feasible. I don’t know – another week or two! “
