Fridolina Rolfö: “Felt like a good position to shoot”

There are few in women’s football who shoot as hard as Fridolina Rolfö. In addition, when she has her sights set correctly, it often ends in a goal.

In the away training match against Scotland, she was substituted in the 69th minute and three minutes later she was able to turn the ball around outside the Scottish penalty area. That made the teammates air Swedish leadership goal.

– I think I shouted three times “dare, dare, dare!”. And she dared. So I take on that goal, says midfielder Emma Berglund.

In the strong wind at St Mirren Park, Rolfö did not hear the call, but it paid off. A few meters of free space was all she needed. She put the ball up, put her left foot on and pushed up 1-0 in the far cross. The match ended 2-0 and it is far from the first time that Rolfö’s distance shot is the basis for a Swedish victory.

– It’s my strength, it’s definitely something I really hope I can be unique with. Because it is something I train a lot on and that I want to do during the match, says Rolfö.

Eternal wear and tear is not just about shooting technique. Shooting hard is just part of it all.

– It is a combination of first touch, to set up the ball well so that you can shoot in a good way, and then it is also about shooting in the right position. It is much more than the technology itself in the end, says Rolfö.

Emma Berglund pays tribute to his teammate’s unique quality. In matches like the one against Scotland, when Sweden has a hard time breaking the deadlock, it is worth its weight in gold.

– She comes in and shows where the cabinet should stand. There are not many who can perform at the level she does in those situations, says Berglund.

Even though she did not hear Berglund’s “dare” shout this evening, she feels that her teammates back her up to shoot when given the opportunity.

– I often hear just that when I get in that situation. And I want to take shots when I get in those situations, and now I also felt that I had time to place it, says Rolfö.

– It felt like a good position to shoot.
