IIn the coming week, the Constitutional Court (VfGH) will examine climate lawsuits – such as those of the twelve children and young people who see their children’s rights and future endangered by the lack of climate protection measures.

The climate protection group Fridays for Future, which supports the lawsuit, insisted in an open letter to the federal government via “Kurier” in advance of “immediate, effective climate protection measures for us and our children”.

The government’s climate policy to date contradicts “across the board the high priority that children’s rights have in Austria”. The activists criticize the climate protection law that expired at the end of 2020, which has since specified “no climate targets, no binding force” and is “therefore completely ineffective”. A new climate protection law should protect the rights of all generations. The effects of the climate crisis are already “ubiquitous in Austria,” the activists reminded of green ski slopes and dry lakes.

The letter was also signed by Martin Puntigam from the Science Busters, artist Erwin Wurm, ski racer Julian Schütter and molecular biologist Martin Moder.
