Fridays For Future cancels bike demo in Freiburg – Freiburg

The bike demo in Freiburg, which Fridays for Future had planned for Friday, has been canceled. The reason is the infection situation in the region. Instead, small, decentralized campaigns are planned.

Freiburg will not contribute a bicycle demonstration to the “global climate strike” proclaimed by the Fridays For Future movement on Friday – the local organizers canceled it yesterday. Originally, a cycling rally should have started on the square of the Old Synagogue, around 1000 participants were expected. The reason for the rejection is the current infection situation in the region. “We have a great responsibility towards all people in the risk group and all other people affected and therefore cannot answer for a bicycle demonstration due to the current high incidence and prospects for a third wave,” said the group’s press release.

Seven-day incidence too high

“We had set ourselves a limit of 30 for the seven-day incidence,” says Sarah-Lea Kuner from Fridays For Future, “and said, if it goes beyond that, we’ll cancel.” Because the catchment area of the demonstration was larger, the incidence values of Emmendingen and the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district were also included, both of which are currently well, well above the 30 mark.

It’s a local decision, in other cities the organizers could make their own decisions, explains Kuner.

Freiburg does not want to cancel the climate strike entirely. The activists are planning “decentralized art campaigns” for Friday, which have not yet been specified, and are calling on sympathizers to participate in an equally decentralized manner – “corona-compliant from home”, it says in an appeal. Artistically with street chalk, so the idea, “on the street or somewhere else”, so the text. “Show us your version of our future” is the motto, the hashtags for publication on the Internet can be found on the website freiburgforfuture.de, among other places.
