“After much deliberation, we have decided to withdraw as a group from Fridays for Future,” with these words Climate activists from Bremen on their website announced the dissolution of the group.

In their statement to justify their step, the people of Bremen are clearly distancing themselves from the umbrella organization. “Fridays for Future Germany is structurally racist,” the letter said. Various members of the climate protection movement had experienced “racist bullying, insults, abuse of power and many other traumatic things” and had left the organization for these reasons.
The Bremen activists also accuse Fridays for Future Germany of “strategic mistakes”. The organization has stuck to the minimum requirement of the 1.5 degree target without naming clear measures. Instead, it was repeatedly pointed out that one should listen to science, the authors continue.
From the point of view of the Bremen activists, Fridays for Future Germany has lost its initially broad social support as a result of this approach. “The result is that Fridays for Future is probably weaker today than at any other time since it was founded,” is the opinion of the people from Bremen.
“No more future”: Fridays For Future Bremen dissolve
The group from Germany’s smallest federal state was always noticed internally because of its radical positions, which can also be seen in the further course of the statement. Fridays For Future Germany is asking the wrong questions and is still aimlessly appealing to politicians “without wanting to denounce the destructive system itself”.
In September 2022, the Bremen local group attracted attention because it conceded a speech to the controversial organization “Palestine Speaks” during the big climate strike. Anti-Semitic positions in relation to the State of Israel had been expressed. In response to later criticism, Fridays For Future Bremen once again defended the decision to invite the group.
