Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – Climate activists from the Fridays for Future movement occupied a Frankfurt parking garage on Friday on the sidelines of a demonstration. After negotiations with the operator and the owner, a maximum of 150 of them are allowed to stay on the top parking deck until 12 noon on Sunday, the police said on Saturday.
At the demonstration under the motto “Traffic turnaround now: cars out of the city center!” According to the police, around 250 people took part on Friday. When the elevator passed the multi-storey car park in the Sachsenhausen district, around 30 demonstrators suddenly ran into the building. They unfurled various banners on the top parking deck and announced that the parking garage was occupied. Another 65 demonstrators would also have blocked the road in front of the parking garage out of town.
With the exception of the driveway to the top parking deck, access to the car park was guaranteed for visitors and the activists were cooperative. The parking garage is still in operation.
In Frankfurt’s city center in particular, it is evident how cars are taking up the already very limited space, Fridays for Future justified the campaign. With the occupation, the group wanted to show that a redistribution of space in Frankfurt is now needed. Instead of park deserts, rooms for social housing and green spaces are now needed, it was said.
