Friday Registration Deadline – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK – New Yorkers have until Friday, July 29, to register to vote in the August 23 primary election for the state Senate and Congress. Early voting will take place from August 13 to 21.

Remember that all mailed-in voter registrations must be postmarked by July 29 and received by your Board of Elections by August 3.

Over the summer, New York residents faced two primary elections after redistricting shook the state’s electoral maps and pushed back the state House and Senate primaries until August.

THESE ARE THE KEY DATES

  • July 29: Last day to register to vote in the August primary.
  • August 13-21: Early Voting.
  • August 23: Vote! Primaries for the state Congress and Senate

Requirements to register to vote

  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Be 18 years old (you can pre-register at 16 or 17, but you can’t vote until 18).
  • A resident of this state and the county, city, or town for at least 30 days prior to the election.
  • Not be in prison for a felony conviction.
  • Not be declared mentally incompetent by a court.
  • Do not claim the right to vote elsewhere.

How and where to register to vote

DEADLINES:

  • Registration by mail: The application must be postmarked no later than July 29, 2022 and received by a board of elections no later than August 3, 2022 to be eligible to vote in the primary.
  • Registration in person: You may register with your local board of elections or any state agency that participates in the National Voter Registration Act on any business day throughout the year, but to be eligible to vote in State and Local Primary, the application must be received no later than July 29, 2022.
  • Change of address: Registered voter change of address notices received by a county board of elections before August 3, 2022 must be processed and entered into the rolls in time for the primary.

How to make registry changes

Change of Name and/or Address

The voter registration form must be used as a change of address form. Change of address notices from registered voters received at least 20 days before a special, primary, or general election by a county board of elections they must be processed and entered into the records in time for that election.

Change of Party Registration

The voter registration form must be used to change your party registration from one party to another or to register for a party for the first time. An application to change a party’s registration for the 2022 primary election must be received by the board of elections no later than February 14, 2022. Changes received from February 15 through seven days after the June primary election will be shall be voided and opened on the seventh day following the June Primary and entered in the voter registry. Please refer to the deadlines mentioned above.

How to cancel your registration

To have your name removed from the voter rolls you must send a written letter to the local board of elections where you lived requesting that your registration be cancelled. You must send a letter in writing, you cannot do it by email. Contact information for all local boards is available on the county board of elections page.

Victims of Domestic Violence

The Election Law allows victims of domestic violence to request a confidential record by submitting an affidavit to their local County Board of Elections stating that they are victims of domestic violence and want their voter record to remain confidential due to the threat of physical harm or emotional to themselves or a family or household member. Your voter registration record will be kept separate from other records for four years and will not be available for inspection or copying by the public or any other person, except election officials acting within the course and scope of their official duties. They may also be excused from going to their polling place to vote and obtain a special ballot.
