The climb up Alpe Cermis that ends the Tour de ski is a real test of strength for the skiers. Before Sunday’s climb, Frida Karlsson was fourth in the overall Tour de Ski standings, just over 40 seconds behind the leading American Jessie Diggins.
Karlsson made an attempt to catch Diggins’ lead and took an early lead position as the riders entered the heavy, heavy climb. But pretty soon it stopped.
Frida Karlsson lost more and more to the American Sophia Laukli and the Norwegian Heidi Weng, who gained an early lead in the stage. She also lost time to Jessie Diggins, who at the finish could celebrate her second overall victory in the Tour de ski.
Although Karlsson was never really close to getting involved in the fight for victory, she fought for a long time for a place on the podium. But even there the 24-year-old had to give up. Frida Karlsson was tenth at the finish line, just over a minute behind Sophia Laukli, who won the stage.
Thus Karlsson, who last year won the entire Tour de ski, had to settle for fourth place in the overall cup.
