The negotiations lasted more than two years. But the Union fribourgeoise du tourisme (UFT) and the private rental platform Airbnb ended up with an agreement on the collection of tourist tax. “We are very satisfied with this agreement”, welcomed on Wednesday Pierre-Alain Morard, director of the UFT, during a press conference organized for the occasion in Epagny, at the foot of one of the emblematic places of the canton, the castle of Gruyères.
Confidential agreement
Concretely, according to the agreement, the details of which remain confidential, Airbnb will automatically collect, from 1 February, the tourist tax, per night and per person, on reservations made via the platform and will pay it quarterly to UFT. The number of active accommodation in the canton amounted to 560 at the last census (January 1, 2019 figure). “This agreement will have several advantages,” explained Pierre-Alain Morard. “It reduces administrative procedures, collects all the tourist taxes linked to Airbnb and thus ensures equal treatment with other types of accommodation.”
