Freya the ferret spends the summer near Oslo

It was named after the goddess associated with love, beauty, fertility, but also with war or gold. People first noticed her when she was scrambling on the pleasure boats in Krager. Since July 17, it has been doing this in the waters of the fjord near Oslo.

Walruses usually live in more northerly areas, so Freya near the Norwegian capital is the subject of great curiosity and media interest. The newspaper Verdens Gang offers regular shots of the young walrus on its website. The website Gizmodo headlined its post about the pinniped: We should all try to live like Freya, the yacht-smashing walrus.

Cameras caught Freya chasing a duck or attacking a swan, but she mostly slept on boats. Walruses can sleep up to 20 hours a day.

“It’s a shame that it will damage something, but that’s how it is when you have a wild animal,” said Rolf Harald Jensen in an interview with TV2 station over the inflatable boat, which was not ready for Freya’s weight and simply did not hold her interest.

It’s not dangerous if you keep your distance

The authorities initially considered whether the female walrus was dangerous and would be better off euthanizing her, but ultimately decided to leave her alone. “She is doing well, feeding, resting and appears to be in good condition,” the Norwegian Fisheries Agency’s directorate said.

The authorities were considering whether to euthanize the female. In the end, they decided it was better to leave her alone.

But at the same time, it asked citizens to stay away from the animal and not try to swim to it or paddle a kayak.

“She’s not as slow and clumsy as you might think when you look at her. If you keep your distance, walruses are not dangerous to people, but if you disturb them and don’t give them the peace they need, they may feel threatened and attack,” the authority warned.

Walruses are classified as a vulnerable animal species, they are protected and feed mainly on invertebrates such as molluscs, shrimps and crabs, or also small fish. Males can weigh up to a ton, females around 700 kilograms.
