Fresh fruit prices increased 17% in one year

“In one year, the price of fruit has increased by 17% in conventional and 6% in organic, that of vegetables by 4% in conventional and 1% in organic”, underlines the association in a press release. “In this very special year, confinement (lack of labor, higher transport costs, less abundant foreign production) and weather conditions for certain products may explain certain increases. These remain nevertheless very important for consumers without being able to ensure in addition (of) a better remuneration of the producers “, regrets the association.
Rural families carried out 75 price surveys from May 30 to June 12 in supermarkets, organic brands and markets, via a team of 46 “consumption watchers” in 26 departments. According to his calculations, buying a standard basket of eight kinds of fruit (apple, melon, apricot, cherry, strawberry, peach, nectarine and pear, at the rate of one kilo or piece per variety) costs 35.36 euros this year in conventional and 59.61 euros in organic. A basket of eight vegetables (eggplant, carrot, zucchini, green bean, pepper, potato, tomato and salad) costs 21.34 euros for conventional and 37 euros for organic.

“Tomatoes, the vegetable most consumed by the French, are also suffering the full force of these increases: + 14% for organic and + 12% for conventional. Peppers take third place on the podium: + 13% for organic and + 9% in conventional “, continues the association.
Rural families notes that the nutritional recommendations of eating at least five fruits and vegetables a day “seem impossible for some families”. She estimates that a family of two adults and two children had to spend in June between 144 and 259 euros, depending on whether it turns to the lowest prices or all organic.
