The French TV5 Monde website stopped at the context and significance of Algeria doubling its military budget for next year (2023) in an unprecedented manner.
The website explained that since 2004, the average Algerian military budget has reached about 10 billion dollars a year, but the government of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune decided to double the army budget for next year to exceed 22 billion dollars, in the context of tensions between Algeria and Morocco, especially over the Sahrawi issue.
The website notes that Morocco’s budget for 2022, which focused on economic recovery measures, was marked by a sharp rise in military spending. For the first time in the Kingdom’s history, the budget of the armed forces exceeded the barrier of 50 billion dirhams, or more than 4.3 billion dollars.
The site adds that Morocco has equipped itself with drones and missiles from Türkiye and China. Tel Aviv also became a supplier of arms to the Queen. In this context, Rabat will purchase the Israeli Skylock Dome system from Skylock Systems, which is designed to monitor and neutralize drones.
According to the website, the Algerian army appears to be concerned about the technological leap achieved by the Moroccan army.
The website emphasizes that Algeria did not understand the agreement concluded between Tel Aviv and Rabat on November 24, 2021 regarding security issues. At the time, the Algerian newspaper L’Expression, which is close to the authorities, headlined: “Mossad is on our borders.” This sums up the prevailing mood in Algeria, says the site, which explains that this increase in Algeria’s military budget is partly financed through rising fuel prices. The price of a barrel of oil jumped from $23 in 2020 to $94 today. Knowing that more than 60 percent of the Algerian state budget depends on gas and oil export resources.
