The last Frenchwoman in contention this Thursday in the second round of the Australian Open, Varvara Gracheva failed to win against Dayana Yastremska. Elina Svitolina qualified.
There will therefore be three French women in the third round of the Australian Open: Diane Parry, Clara Burel and Océane Dodin. The fourth chance tricolor, Varvara Gracheva, did not manage to join her three compatriots, for her first Australian Open contested under the colors of France. Opposed to the Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, although much lower ranked than her (93rd against 39th), the Moscow native lost 6-3, 6-2 in 1h07. There was no suspense for this first match between the two players. Yastremska (killer of Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova in the previous round) saved the only break point Gracheva had. It was in the first set, when she had just broken to lead 3-1. The Ukrainian finally kept her commitment until the end to pocket the round. In the second, two breaks at 1-1 and 4-2 allowed her to win without trembling, Gracheva only managing to glean five points from her opponent’s throw-in. Dayana Yastremska will be opposed in the next round to the player in form of the moment, Emma Navarro (26th), who has lost only one of the eleven matches she played in 2024. The 22-year-old American, daughter of billionaire owner of the Charleston tournament, is playing her first Australian Open and she beat Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the second round with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in 2h13 in an eight-break match. However, she was down 2-0 in the last round, before winning.
The tournament also continues for Elina Svitolina (23rd), who had no difficulty eliminating Viktoriya Tomova (70th): 6-1, 6-3 in 1h05. Broken at the start of the match, the Ukrainian then put together six games to win the first set. In the second, she accelerated from 3-3 to win and reach the third round.
