There was great joy among the French six afterwards and emotions also ran high in the mixed zone. The riders seem to be fans of the relatively new event, but it is not really getting off the ground. “The interest is minimal. The real toppers don’t seem to mind this either,” says Zeger.
Maxim therefore suggests a new format. “Why wouldn’t they organize a kind of sprint race on Friday, as we know it from Formula 1? Then the riders can get to know the course and test their legs without expending too much energy. And then several top players will start, because that is not the case with the Mixed Relay. The Netherlands didn’t even start at all.”
Van Empel’s uncertainty
Maxim and Zeger also look ahead to the World Championships for the elite women. Fem van Empel is the clear top favorite there, especially after her strong performances in Benidorm and Hoogerheide. “In fact, stress and bad luck are Van Empel’s biggest opponents,” says Maxim. “Despite her impressive dominance in the field at times, she sometimes remains very insecure. Will that affect her at a major championship,” the men decided.
