The French team takes to the track on Monday July 24 and for six days in Maribor (Slovenia), on the occasion of the European Youth Olympic Festival. The collective is ambitious, with many chances of medals.
The U18 European Championships are taking a break this year and the Youth Worlds (cadets) have disappeared from the calendar since 2017. Result: the European Youth Olympic Festival is the “major and unique” international event of this 2023 season in this age category for the Blueberries, as Patrick Gellens, head of the France U18 teams at the national technical direction, reminds us.
Four French record(wo)men
The tricolor collective looks great, with several French record holders and recordwomen in its ranks: Meta Tumba in the 400m hurdles (57”55), Léna Auvray in the 5000m walk (22’44”17), who will be the flag bearer for the French Olympic team after her victory in 2022 and her bronze medal at the Europe U18, Yanis Vanlanduyt in the 800m (1’47”98) and Samuel Conjungo on the discus (62.57m). So many athletes who can claim the podium and even the highest step, just like Laura Montauban in the 100m hurdles (13”20), Vanessa Lokuli in the long jump (6.27m), Marie Rougetet in the hammer (68.31m), Ylann Bizasene in the 100m (10”44), Jérémie Nzoungou in the 110m hurdles (13”47) and in the triple jump (15, 70 m), or even Elijah Pasquier at the height (2.15 m).
“With 28 entries, we can hope for around ten medals,” says Patrick Gellens. It should be noted that certain athletes who revealed themselves during the French U18 championships, last weekend in Châteauroux, do not appear in the team, the deadline set by the national Olympic and sports committee having been fixed before this meeting. In addition, several Bleuets could also have had their place individually during the Europe U20. “But the selection for the EYOF was privileged, because you first look for medals in your category to learn how to win. You have to go one step at a time. “Six cadets will still make the trip to Jerusalem: five in the relays and one in individual, the long jumper Soizick Nlend, who has reached a huge milestone in France U18 (6.40 m).
