French Survey Reveals Willingness to Make Sacrifices for Climate Change Adaptation

A survey carried out by the French Institute of Public Opinion (Ifop) for Intercommunalités de France reveals that the French are ready to make sacrifices and adapt their behavior in the face of climate change.

Awareness of the effects of climate change?

The year 2023 is the hottest that France has experienced. This year’s abnormally high temperatures, heatwaves and droughts have affected the daily lives of many French people. And these events have somewhat raised awareness about the effects of climate change.

Thus, according to the results of a survey carried out by Ifop for Intercommunalités de France, reported by “Les Échos”, 85% of respondents believe that the adaptation of society, the economy and lifestyles must be a priority.

The French ready to make concessions

Climate change will directly impact the lives of the French over the next ten years, this is what 82% of people surveyed by Ifop think. They are even ready to adopt restrictive measures to move towards the ecological transition. Thus, 85% of respondents are in favor of restrictions during periods of water shortage. A large majority also accepts “zero net artificialization”.

Among the measures that more than half of those surveyed are ready to accept are alternative modes of travel and the gradual ban on the circulation of the most polluting vehicles in city centers.

That said, analyst Jérôme Fourquet explains “ We must undoubtedly bring a big caveat to this survey: between adherence in principle to a measure, and its acceptance when it is implemented, there can be a gulf. Local elected officials know this well ».
