The Prime Minister of the French Community, Pierre-Yves Jeholet (MR), pointed out on Wednesday the responsibility that Flanders bears in the recent revival of the pandemic in Belgium. According to him, Flanders has “wiped its feet to the rules”.

During a debate in the competent parliament on the tightening of health measures after the last consultation committee, Pierre-Yves Jeholet strongly denounced the choice made in Flanders at the end of the summer to lift the essential health measures.

In the north of the country, “sometimes people wanted to flex their muscles because they were ‘vaccination world champions’”, according to Jeholet. “The fact that we are in this situation today may be because we stopped wearing the mouth mask and didn’t care about the rules. That is the reality today!” said the liberal, who was greeted with applause.

Criticism of Jambon

Without naming names, Jeholet also shot a few arrows in the direction of his Flemish counterpart Jan Jambon, who is accused of having “instrumentalized” the Consultation Committee. Although another Consultation Committee meeting is scheduled for next week, Jeholet declined to comment on some hopes for a quick relaxation of health measures. “I don’t think that will be the case,” he warned.

The priority for Jeholet will rather be to fully reopen schools from the beginning of January, “even if that means wearing the mask in class until the end of January”. He does not expect major changes for the other affected sectors. “It would be a mistake to think that we will reopen everything next week.” As for the decision to strictly limit audiences in theaters to a maximum of 200 people, it could be subject to review, Jeholet said, taking into account the size of the halls.
