A French soldier has been killed in a mortar attack in Mali. That has the Elysée announced. The soldier, Alexandre Martin, was killed in an attack near Gao, in the southeast of the country. The target of the mortar attack was the military camp of Operation Barkhane, the French-led mission that has been fighting jihadist rebel movements since 2014.
President Macron’s office said nine people were injured in the attack. The perpetrators were also eliminated.
Macron’s office writes that he was very touched by the loss. The president “pays respect in memory of this soldier, who died for France in the performance of his mission”. “He shares the pain of his family, loved ones and his brothers in arms,” reads a press release from the Élysée.
