French Public Opinion Divided on Proposal to Abolish Family Allowances for Parents of Repeat Minors

While France is facing a serious social crisis following the death of young Nahel, Ifop-Fiducial for Sud radio questioned the French on the proposal to abolish family allowances for parents of repeat minors.

On the one hand, a majority of French people say they are in favor of this measure (65%) because it would make parents more responsible for monitoring their children who are repeat offenders. It should be noted that the French with a child under 14 present in the household are slightly less favorable (59% “favourable” versus 67% overall). On the other hand, a small proportion of French people seem opposed to this measure (20%) because it would worsen the already difficult situation of the families concerned.

In detail, we find that the French least in favor of this measure are under 35 years old (53% in favor against 69% among French people over 35). Divisions also appear according to political proximity: 35% of those close to France Insoumise are in favor of it, against 89% of supporters of the National Rally, 86% of those close to the Republicans and 83% of Renaissance.
