The La France Insoumise (LFI) party today warned President Emmanuel Macron that it would initiate impeachment proceedings on the grounds that he is ignoring the results of the recent legislative elections.
In a statement published by La Tribune Dimanche, leaders of the left-wing organisation accused the president of carrying out “an institutional coup against democracy”.
LFI, together with the socialists, the ecologists and the communists, formed the New Popular Front bloc, an alliance that won the largest number of deputies in the elections of June 30 and July 7, although it was far from obtaining an absolute majority in the National Assembly.
In keeping with the republican tradition, the left-wing forces are demanding that Macron appoint a new prime minister from within their ranks, with economist Lucie Castets as a candidate, but the head of state does not seem willing to meet the demand, amid pressure from his camp to lean to the right.
We give this message a tone of solemn warning, said the signatories of the text, among others the leader of the conscientious objectors, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, their coordinator, Manuel Bompard, and their group leader in the Assembly, Mathilde Panot.
They also stressed that all constitutional means will be used to prevent “the government from subjecting us to a coup against the basic rules of democracy.”
Macron accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and his entire cabinet a month ago, following the government’s defeats in the European and legislative elections in June, but asked them to remain in their posts until a new leader is appointed in Matignon and given the task of forming a government.
The president announced consultations with party leaders and parliamentary factions starting on August 23, a position criticised by the New Popular Front, which insists on its alleged right to have a prime minister.
In order to successfully initiate a process to impeach a president in France, serious obstacles must be overcome, including convincing the National Assembly and the Senate to create a “high court” and a resolution adopted by the Assembly Bureau, the Law Commission and two-thirds of both chambers of Parliament.
