French President Macron’s Updated Stance on Russia-Ukraine War Sparks Controversy

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that his judgments on the Russia-Ukraine war had been seriously reconsidered, the president’s comments following widespread controversy over his recent comments that sending Western troops to Ukraine could not be ruled out.

Macron said on Monday that “whatever is necessary” must be done to ensure that Russia is defeated.

“These are serious enough questions. All the words I say on this matter are weighed, thought out and evaluated,” Macron told reporters.

The president did not want to make any other comments.

Macron said Monday after a meeting of European leaders that there was no consensus on sending Western ground troops to Ukraine, while saying “nothing should be ruled out.”

Most of Macron’s European allies said they would not send troops to Ukraine, but French officials explained that the troops could be sent for support operations, such as demining, rather than fighting Russian troops.
