[4日 ロイター] – Criticized French President Emmanuel Macron’s comment that Western countries should consider Russia’s security needs if Russia agrees to talks to end the war in Ukraine.

In an interview with French TV station TF1, Macron said Europe needs to prepare its future security architecture. He also said that it is necessary to consider “how to give guarantees when Russia returns to the negotiating table”.

Mikhail Podlyak, adviser to the Ukrainian president, tweeted on Wednesday that it was the world that needed security from Russia, not the other way around.

Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, said a “denuclearized and demilitarized” Russia would be the best guarantee of peace not only for Ukraine but for the world.

Macron’s security proposals for Russia have also been strongly opposed by some Baltic states that border Russia and fear that Russia is a growing threat. Former Lithuanian foreign minister Linas Linkevichus has said Russia will have security as long as it does not “attack, annex or occupy” its neighbors.
