French President Emmanuel Macron said that the European security architecture should fully ensure the security of Ukraine, but should also include the absence of confrontation with Russia. He stated this in an interview Opinion.
“I have always said that in the future the European security architecture should fully ensure the security of Ukraine. But it must also include not confronting Russia and rebuilding a sustainable balance. But there are still many stages to be overcome in order to get to this point,” Mr. Macron said.
According to the President of France, Russia has suffered a “geopolitical defeat”, has fallen into “vassal dependence” on China and makes its historical allies doubt. The task of Europe, according to Mr. Macron, is to help Ukraine in the counteroffensive, as well as to prepare issues of security guarantees.
In early December 2022, Mr. Macron said that after the end of the conflict in Ukraine, Europe will have to build an updated security architecture that involves the provision of guarantees for Russia. The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, urged not to rush into this discussion, explaining that Ukraine should receive such guarantees first. The Elysee Palace believes that the French President’s comment was taken out of context.
