French President Macron has announced that France will supply dozens of missiles and hundreds of bombs to Ukraine. He made the announcement during a press conference last night.
In addition to the bombs, this involves about forty long-range SCALP cruise missiles. It is a new delivery after an unknown number of SCALPs that France already sent to Ukraine in the summer.
Macron said a Russian victory would undermine the international legal order. “We can’t let Russia win, and we shouldn’t let that happen,” he said. He said he wanted to go to Ukraine himself next month.
During the press conference, Macron also discussed other matters. For example, he announced plans to better prepare France for crises in the world. The country has the right cards for success, he said. Noting that the world is changing, torn by wars and other crises, he said he is confident that “our children will live in a better tomorrow than ours today.”
New impetus
With the announcements, Macron seems to want to start the new year with new momentum, in which Paris will be in the spotlight during the Olympic Games.
In recent months, Macron’s presidency has been marked by domestic conflicts, especially over the retirement age and migration. There were also riots in hundreds of cities last year after the shooting of a teenager by a police officer. Recent polls show that many French people are concerned about inflation, security, health care and education.
Last week, Macron introduced an important change. He appointed a new Prime Minister, Gabiel Attal, the youngest Prime Minister France has ever had at 34 years old. There are several new ministers in his government. Attal and several members of the new cabinet looked on during Macron’s press conference last night at the presidential palace.
