French police shot and killed a 17-year-old boy who failed to stop when ordered to by law enforcement outside Paris on Tuesday.
A video shared on social media shows a police officer pointing a gun at the driver of a car before a gunshot is heard. The car then crashes and stops.
The teenager died from a gunshot wound to the chest at the scene despite the help of emergency services.
Footage of the incident shows two police officers trying to stop the car. One points his weapon at the driver through the window and appears to shoot at point blank range.
The victim’s name is Nael M. Two others were also in the car at the time of the shooting – one fled and the other was arrested by police.
The 38-year-old police officer accused of shooting the teenager is being held on murder charges.
The shooting sparked a series of protests Tuesday night in Nanterre, the region west of Paris where the teenager was killed. 15 people were arrested after rioting.
Cars and garbage cans were set on fire, and bus shelters were destroyed. Fireworks were also set off near the police station. Police used tear gas to disperse the protesters, some of whom built barricades throughout the night.
French authorities have launched two separate investigations into the teenager’s death – one into possible manslaughter by a public official and another into the driver’s failure to stop and the alleged attempt to kill the police officer.
