The man attacked the police just before midnight at Saint-Lazare station, one of the liveliest railway stations in the French capital.

“Two police officers used service weapons to protect themselves and neutralize him. The injured individual was further taken care of by the emergency services,” said the French national railway operator SCCF.

The attacker was shot twice and his health is critical, the Paris prosecutor’s office said.

An investigation has been launched into the attempted murder of a public official, incitement to violence and violence with the use of a weapon.

The attacker had not previously come to the attention of the security services.

French society has continued to be in a state of heightened alarm since the January 2015 Islamist terrorist attacks, in which 130 people were killed.

At the end of 2020, there were several terrorist attacks by Islamic radicals, in which there was only one attacker. In an attack in October 2020, teacher Samuel Pati was killed.

In an attack that caused shock in French society, a terrorist beheaded a teacher after showing a cartoon of the Muslim prophet Muhammad to his students in a free speech class.
