French police have arrested six suspects for the theft of a collection from fashion house Balmain, the news agency reports AFP. The six people in their twenties were arrested in the suburbs of Paris. Some of the loot was reportedly found during house searches.
The fifty items of clothing were stolen last September, ten days before Balmain’s new collection was to be shown at Fashion Week.
According to Olivier Rousteing, Balmain’s artistic director, an armed group had hijacked the van containing the collection. That bus was on its way from the Paris airport to the fashion house’s headquarters.
This is an unprecedented theft within the fashion world. Balmain had to quickly arrange replacement outfits for the fashion show, which went ahead as usual.
A source within the police says otherwise AFP that it does not appear that the perpetrators were called in to rob that fashion house. “If this had been made to order, the items would already have been sold.”
