French Nationalist Leader Le Pen Threatens to Split from AfD in European Parliament

25 January 2024

A big bang in the European Parliament: After protests in Germany, French nationalist leader Le Pen is moving away from the AfD. She even threatens to be kicked out of the joint ID faction.

“I completely disagree with the proposals that were said to have been discussed at this meeting”said Le Pen, referring to the plans for “remigration” discussed in Potsdam.

It must be checked “whether there will be any consequences” for the joint group in the EU Parliament, Le Pen added. “We are going to have to talk about these very big disagreements” said the politician.

Le Pen’s “Rassemblement National” is currently well ahead in the polls for the European elections. She believes she has good chances in the 2027 presidential election. She has been trying to give herself a moderate image for some time.

But there are also ideological differences. In contrast to the AfD, which is influenced by ethnic thinking, the French nationalists do not advocate the expulsion of immigrants.

“We have never defended a policy of ‘remigration’ that would involve depriving people of French nationality, even if we criticize the conditions for obtaining it”I know Le Pen.

Who would have thought?
