French National Assembly Deputies to Meet in New York amidst Tensions over Pension Reform

They cannot leave each other. While they cross swords on the benches of the National Assembly, the deputies Christopher Weissberg (Renaissance), Rachel Kéké and Nathalie Oziol (NUPES) will all three be in New York at the same time.

The first, representing the French in North America, will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, April 18 at 8:30 a.m. in the premises of the Moulin à Café, the HQ café-restaurant for the families of the Lycée français de New York (registrations here). The other two elected will organize a meeting open to all, the date and place of which remain to be confirmed.

These visits come against a backdrop of tensions in France around the pension reform. The Constitutional Council largely validated the text on Friday, April 14. It will certainly be discussed during the meetings organized by the elected officials, all three members of the France-United States friendship group of the National Assembly.

MPs Kéké and Oziol will take advantage of their trip to meet American activists and elected officials between New York, Virginia and Washington in order to build ” lasting ties of solidarity and cooperation with the American progressive left”, according to a document addressed to possible interlocutors. They will meet with Minnesota Congressman Ilhan Omar, progressive senators from New York State and bus drivers on strike against the French carrier Keolis in Virginia. During their visit, they intend to discuss pension reform, the response of the police to the demonstrations, the rise of the far right, but also other subjects such as ” workers’ rights, feminism and anti-racism, social and racial segregation, purchasing power, health and minimum wages”.

Christopher Weissberg will go to the United Nations with Secretary of State Marlène Schiappa as part of the work on a resolution on the social and solidarity economy and will have lunch with members of AFFIN, the association of French international civil servants. . He will be in Cambridge on Wednesday, for a conference of former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe at Harvard, and will participate in a public meeting with the local French community in the afternoon. He will go the next day to the MIT campus for various meetings.
