The French National Assembly on Wednesday approved an increase in the country’s seven-year defense budget to 413 billion euros, which the Ministry of Defense called necessary to maintain the country’s defense capability.
Writes about it “European truth” with reference to Le Figaro.
The so-called military planning bill for 2024-2030 was supported by 408 deputies of the lower house of the French parliament, 87 voted against – primarily representatives of the left of the Communist Party and the France Unbowed group.
The final adoption of the bill in the upper house of parliament, the Senate, is scheduled for July 14, after which it must be signed by the president.
The document provides for an increase in the defense budget of France in 2030 to 69 billion euros, while in 2023 it is 44 billion euros. Thus, over the next seven years, spending will grow by 3-4 billion rubles.
French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu cited the threat of terrorism, the war in Ukraine, the militarization of outer space and the growing complexity of cyberattacks as the reason for the increase in spending. Also, additional financing should mitigate the impact of inflation.
By 2030, the French Ministry of Defense plans to receive up to 150 Jaguar armored vehicles and three additional frigates. France’s nuclear deterrence programs and the next-generation aircraft carrier construction schedule until 2038 are being maintained.
We had to save on the supply of additional Rafale combat aircraft – they will be transferred to 2032. The space program will also be reduced somewhat – they will not launch the third communications satellite Syracuse IV.
One of the discussed innovations of the bill is an increase the age limit for conscripting reservists into the armed forces of France is up to 70 years from 60-65. At the same time, the military support of Ukraine, as reported by Lecornu, will not be affected by the new defense budget.
