Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
A number of Muslim leaders in French condemned calls for a boycott of products from this country that occurred in several Muslim countries in the world as a form of protest at the President’s comments Emmanuel Macron.
The leaders of the French Muslim organization called the boycott an “unjustifiable” act and accused the boycott party of “using Islam for political gain.”
“There was a time when we had to show solidarity with our country which has experienced unjustified attacks in recent weeks,” wrote a joint statement by three major mosque leaders and three Muslim associations in France.
They said French law “provides open space for freedom of expression” and gives every citizen the right to “believe it or not.”
The leaders of the Grand Mosque in Paris, Lyon and Reunion Island, along with leaders of three French Muslim organizations, condemned terrorism “and all forms of violence in the name of our religion”.
They also expressed regret over the “call for assassination called by a number of other countries’ leaders” AFP referring to the tweet of former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
Mahathir Mohamad previously tweeted that Muslims have the “right to anger and kill millions of French citizens”.
This commotion is the result of President Emmanuel Macron’s comments about Islam and defending the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad by Charlie Hebdo magazine in the name of freedom of expression.
On Friday (23/10), Macron said Islam was “a religion that is experiencing a worldwide crisis”. He issued this statement after the incident of the history teacher, Samuel Paty, beheading by Abdoullakh Abouyezidovitch (18). The incident was triggered by a discussion of the Prophet Muhammad cartoon in his class.
Macron in his speech also called for a campaign against radical Islamic groups.
However, the French President’s comments regarding Islam were deemed offensive to Muslims and caused anger and protests from various parts of the world, as well as a boycott of French products.
