Accustomed to sparkling every first five minutes of each hour after dark, the Iron Lady deviated from the rule for a “special sparkle” at the time of voting at 6:49 p.m. Present on site, AFP reports that purple smoke bombs were set off on the Trocadéro esplanade, on the other side of the Seine, where a giant screen had been installed to follow this exceptional session of Parliament at the Château de Versailles.

Among the crowd gathered at the Trocadéro, “people of all ages, the majority of whom are women”note l’AFP. “The belt, never again”, “March 4 we make history” or even “V for victory”, could we read on the signs of feminist activists. It was together that they heard the President of the National Assembly Yaël-Braun Pivet pronounce the results. This Monday, 780 deputies and senators approved the introduction to article 34 of the basic text of the sentence: “The law determines the conditions under which the freedom guaranteed to women to have recourse to a voluntary termination of pregnancy is exercised.” Only 72 parliamentarians voted against.
