The French Ministry of Economy and Finance was raided this week due to investigations into the record transfer of football star Neymar to Paris St. Germain. This was reported by the AFP news agency, citing a source familiar with the case. The reason for the search was the suspicion of tax breaks as part of the Brazilian’s €222 million signing from FC Barcelona in 2017.
The operation was carried out by police officers from the Central Office for Combating Corruption and Tax Fraud and the National Directorate of Criminal Investigation, and several departments of the General Directorate of Public Finance were targeted. Among other things, the office of the general director was searched on Monday. These suspicions, which are just beginning to be investigated, are part of an investigation that has been ongoing since September 2022 around influence peddling attributed to PSG’s former communications director, Jean-Martial Ribes.
Tax benefits after 222 million euro transfer for PSG
The current investigation concerns the question of whether Hugues Renson, as a former vice-president of the National Assembly, tried to obtain “tax advantages” from the government for PSG in the 222 million euro transfer. An investigative report sent to the investigative judge on November 21 and seen by AFP raises the question of a possible “trafficking in influence” in which Mr Renson could be involved.
