French Minister of the Interior Deploys 45,000 Police Officers to Tackle Violent Protests

45,000 police officers will be mobilized tonight, announced the French Minister of the Interior. They are added to the deployment of armored vehicles of the gendarmerie, to deal with the violence which has affected many cities in France for three nights.

Incidents have been reported in the Paris region, Marseille, Reims, Nantes, Lyon, Strasbourg where a shopping center was vandalized. In Marseille, 49 people were arrested at the start of the evening. Projectile launches, tear gas: the tension was high. In Paris, the police evacuated the Place de la Concorde where hundreds of people gathered. A mayor was attacked in the Tours region and his car set on fire.

Footballer Kylian Mbappé called for calm around 11:30 p.m. It’s your property that you destroy, your quarters […] There are other peaceful and constructive ways to express yourself […] the time of violence must stop.”

The previous night, 875 people had been arrested, 492 buildings were targeted, 2,000 vehicles burned and dozens of stores looted, especially in the heart of Paris.

Emmanuel Macron called “all parents responsible“, criticizing the instrumentalization of Nahel’s death and asking social networks to remove content and identify users linked to this urban violence. The Keeper of the Seals Eric Dupond-Moretti detailed in a circular the criminal response “quick, firm and systematic” that he wanted against the perpetrators of urban violence, including against minors and their parents.

Measures are taken locally, including travel restrictions. After curfews in Clamart and Meudon (Hauts-de-Seine) in particular, Marseille banned demonstrations on Friday, as did the prefecture of Hérault. The two main cities in southern Alsace, Colmar and Mulhouse, have issued municipal decrees establishing curfews for unaccompanied minors for the next few days.

The government has also decided to cancel “large-scale” events, according to Matignon, in particular the concerts of Mylène Farmer, scheduled at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis on Friday and Saturday. Restaurants record a wave of cancellations.

School parties have been abolished, especially in Île-de-France.

Public transport has been stopped since 9 p.m. Connections between Switzerland and France are interrupted.
