French Minister Clément Beaune Addresses Controversial A69 Motorway Project and Promises Reduction in Environmental Impact

“At a time of ecological planning, we cannot do as before,” declared Clément Beaune on France Inter. The Minister Delegate in charge of Transport was questioned in particular about motorway projects and in particular that of the A69 between Toulouse and Castres.

“We must move forward,” Clément Beaune first began by saying about this controversial project, highlighting the court decisions favorable to its maintenance. “We will reduce their impact on the environment,” assured the minister regarding current highway projects. On Monday, 300 people gathered in front of the Ministry of Ecological Transition to denounce “an ecological, economic and democratic aberration”.

They consider this project contrary to the climate emergency. In an open letter to political decision-makers, opponents of the project highlight the fact that the A69 would come into conflict with the existing railway line.

In addition to this project, Clément Beaune declared that the government would take “courageous” decisions, ensuring that “several highway projects will be stopped”. The minister has not yet said what these projects were or their number since this is the subject of “discussions with elected officials”.

Clément Beaune had already announced at the end of April that a “certain number of road projects” would be “reviewed”, promising a verdict “by the start of summer”.
