Tens of thousands of French people marched today in Paris and other cities with various demands on International Workers’ Day, a day that left violent episodes and 45 arrests in this capital.
According to the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), more than 200 thousand people responded to union calls to take to the streets this Wednesday, while the Ministry of the Interior estimated 121 thousand participants nationwide.
The protesters’ demands were various, with the predominance of criticism of the government for its reform proposal for unemployment insurance, the high cost of living and the management of job protection.
Demonstrations of support for Palestine in the face of the tragedy that the Gaza Strip is experiencing due to Israeli aggression and rejection of the organization of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, scheduled for July 26 to August 11, were also seen in the marches.
The Parisian police recorded 45 arrests and some violent acts, which left – according to the prefect Laurente Nuñez – 13 uniformed officers with minor injuries.
Incidents also occurred in cities such as Lyon and Nantes, although in general the mobilizations passed calmly.
