Paty had shown Mohammed cartoons in his lesson on freedom of speech. For an 18-year-old student, also of Chechen descent, that was reason to behead the teacher in the street. Before the police shot him, he posted a photo of his victim online.
It was then liked by the 22-year-old man, who is now in prison.
Authorities in action
Following the teacher’s murder, the French authorities have taken tough action against individuals and organizations they suspect of supporting or fueling Muslim extremism.

The man who has now been arrested also denies that he has been radicalized, the prosecution said. He added that during a house search several knives and ‘other weapons’, which he did not specify, were found.
Depicting the prophet is considered a serious offense in strict Islamic circles. In a country such as France, satire is an important tradition and religious criticism in this form is commonplace.
