French inventor Franky Zapata crashes flyboard and plunges into lake

French inventor Franky Zapata, who previously crossed the Channel with his flyboard, has crashed during a demonstration. Footage shows Zapata falling 50 feet (15 meters) shortly after taking off. He ended up in a lake.

The accident happened yesterday during a seaplane event in Biscarosse, France. Footage, filmed by bystanders, shows Zapata’s homemade flyboard faltering shortly after takeoff, before flying lower and lower, eventually ending up in a lake.

After the crash, emergency services are said to have pulled him out of the water. French media report that Zapata suffered only minor injuries from the crash. He was said to have been transferred to a nearby hospital just to be safe.

Famous

Franky Zapata rose to fame in 2019 after crossing the Channel between France and England with his flyboard. The board was propelled by five mini-turbocharged engines, which could then fly for ten minutes until the fuel had to be replenished. That happened in the middle of the sea from a ship. Although a previous attempt to cross the Channel failed, this time Zapata succeeded. Within twenty minutes he landed safely on the ground at St Margaret’s Bay.
