French Prime Minister Jean Castex promised all French people “a discount at the pump of fifteen cents per liter” on Saturday, for four months from April 1. “That means you save nine euros for every full tank of 60 liters,” he calculated. This measure should help the French to cope with rising fuel prices. That is what the prime minister told the newspaper Le Parisien.

The measure will cost the French state around two billion euros. The measure covers all fuels and applies to both households and families. The discount will be deducted at the time of payment, at the cash register or with the bank card at the pump, and will therefore not be visible on the prices posted at the entrance of the gas station, Prime Minister Castex said.
In turn, the French Prime Minister called on distributors and oil companies to make an “additional gesture”. “If the state makes an effort of fifteen cents a liter, and they make an effort of five cents, for example, that means twenty cents in the pocket of the French.”
In order to cushion the consequences of the rising energy prices, exacerbated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the French government has already taken various measures, such as blocking the gas price, limiting the increase in the electricity price to four percent and a so-called “exceptional energy check”. Prime Minister Castex will propose an economic and social “resilience plan” next week.
