French Government Expresses Concern Over US Citizen’s Appointment as Chief Economist at the EU Directorate-General for Competition

The leading French publication Le Figaro reported on the dissatisfaction of the French with regard to the European Commission’s appointment of a US citizen to an important position in the EU. The European Commission has announced that Yale University economics professor Fiona Scott Morton has been named the new Chief Economist at the EU Directorate-General for Competition (DGFC). She is due to take office on September 1st.

In particular, the minister delegate of digitalization and telecommunications of France openly expressed his indignation Jean-Noel Barro. In his opinion, a US citizen in a key position in the EU on competition can influence the EU’s desire to regulate the activities of US digital multinational giants.

“At a time when Europe is embarking on the world’s most ambitious digital platform regulation project,” the decision raises “legitimate questions,” Barro said.

In turn, the French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna called on the European authorities to reconsider the decision to appoint a US citizen to a key post in the European Commission (EC).

“We are overwhelmed by the appointment of the Chief Economist of the Competition Authority of the European Commission. Digital regulation is a key issue for France and Europe. This appointment deserves a review by the (EC),” she wrote on the social network.

It should be noted that on July 11, the European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager announced that the post of chief economist in the competition department of the EC will be taken by American Fiona Scott Morton, who once worked in the administration of the former US president Barack Obama.

Morton has previously worked as a consultant for companies such as Apple and Microsoft.
