French government bans esports, streamer and other words in English | esports

The French Ministry of Culture said the video game industry is full of foreign words that can be difficult for people who are not used to video games to understand.

The French ministry told AFP that a group of experts had searched gaming industry websites and magazines to see if the French terms determined by the government already existed. According to the Culture body, the idea is to allow the entire population of France to communicate in an easier way.

France regularly issues dire warnings about the degradation of its language across the Channel, or more recently the Atlantic. The Académie Française, a secular language agency, warned in February of a “degradation that should not be seen as inevitable”. He highlighted terms including SNCF train operator branding “Ouigo” along with direct imports such as “big data” and “drive-in”.
