The French Foreign Ministry announced, “We support all the decisions adopted at the ECOWAS summit on Niger, including the deployment of the organization’s ‘standby force’ to restore constitutional order.
Paris renewed its “strong condemnation of the ongoing coup attempt in Niger, as well as the detention of elected President Mohamed Bazoum and his family,” the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
At the conclusion of the Economic Community of West African Community (ECOWAS) summit, which was held in Nigeria to discuss the situation in Niger, the leaders of the countries adopted a more diplomatic approach with their call for the adoption of dialogue as the basis for the approach to intervention in the crisis.
ECOWAS had threatened military intervention in Niger if the military council did not back down from the coup, but the deadline set by the bloc expired last Sunday without any significant incident.
