In the new defense alliance between the United States, Australia and Britain, the latter plays the role of the “fifth wheel,” the French minister said.
France did not recall its ambassador from Great Britain, as it did with the United States and Australia, since it considers its role in the creation of the AUKUS alliance secondary. This was announced on Saturday, September 18, by French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian in interview TV channel France 2.
“We are recalling the ambassadors in order to assess the situation in a new way. In the case of Great Britain, there is no need for this. We know their policy of constant opportunism,” the minister said.
At the same time, when asked by the host whether other measures against London are possible, Le Drian replied that, in his opinion, “Great Britain has the role of the fifth wheel in this story.”
Discussing the agreement between Washington, Canberra and London, the French Foreign Minister said that it showed “duplicity, contempt and lies” and that “they do not behave like that in relations with an ally.”
The minister expressed his conviction that the crisis that has arisen will make itself felt when discussing NATO’s future strategy and, obviously, will influence its definition.
Finally, Le Drian said that “Europe must acquire its own strategic compass” and that this issue will be in the French sphere of responsibility at the beginning of 2022 – when France takes over the EU presidency.
Recall USA, UK and Australia form an alliance called AUKUS. According to the agreement, the countries will exchange advanced technologies, including military ones. The first initiative within the alliance was creation of nuclear submarines for Australia, which is why it is withdrawing from the submarine agreement with the French company Naval Group.
In this regard, France decided recall their ambassadors in the USA and Australia for consultation.
