French film director Jean-Jacques Beineix dies

His works “Diva” and “Betty Blue – 37.2 degrees in the morning” are considered cult, the latter was even nominated for the Oscar as best foreign language film. Director Jean-Jacques Beineix has died at the age of 75.

After a long illness, French film director Jean-Jacques Beineix died in his Paris apartment on Thursday at the age of 75. This was announced by his brother.

Beinix was one of the pioneers of French cinema in the 80s and 90s. For his first feature film “Diva” he was awarded four Césars in Paris in 1982. His film “Betty Blue – 37.2 degrees in the morning” was nominated for an Oscar in 1987 as best foreign language film. Both films have cult status today.

Offers from Hollywood

Beneix originally studied medicine. In 1964 he began as Jean Becker’s assistant director on the television series “A French Marriage”, later assisting other directors as well. He made his first short film in 1977: “Le Chien de Monsieur Michel”.

Beinix received a few offers from Hollywood, which he turned down. Most recently, he mainly shot TV documentaries. He wrote an autobiography in 2006 and his first novel, Toboggan, in 2020.
