Audrey Diwan is the sixth female winner of the Golden Lion in Venice. This year she succeeds Chloé Zhao, who won the top prize last year with “Nomadland”.
Many renowned filmmakers took part in the 78th edition of the Venice Film Festival. Jane Campion, Pedro Almodovar, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Paolo Sorrentino, among others. Sorrentino was allowed to cheer twice during the proclamation.
The Italian director was awarded the jury prize for his autobiographical film “The hand of god”. That film tells the story of the loss of his parents when he was a teenager. The lead actor in the film, Filipo Scotti, was awarded the Best Young Actor award.
Jane Campion received the award for best director for her film “The power of the dog”. The New Zealand director is known for “The piano”, which was awarded the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival in 1993. She also directed “The portrait of a lady” and “Holy smoke”.
The other well-known names on the palmares of the 78th Venice Film Festival are Penelope Cruz and Maggie Gyllenhaal. They took home the prizes for best actress in “Parallel Mothers” and best screenplay for “The Lost Daughter” respectively.
