“What is more important – art or the right to healthy and sustainable food,” asked the protesters.
“Your farming system is sick. Our farmers are dying on the job,” the protesters continued, before security guards placed black screens in front of them and led them out of the room.
The organization “Riposte Alimentaire” (“Food Counterattack”) has taken responsibility for the action.
The action marks “the beginning of a civil resistance campaign with a clear demand for sustainable food social security,” the organization said in a statement.
French farmers have been protesting for days, demanding improvements in wages, taxes and regulations.
This is not the first attack on a da Vinci painting.
In May 2022, a man threw a cream pie at the painting. Artists should focus more on the planet, he expressed.
Thanks to the thick protective glass, the painting was not damaged.
The painting has been behind glass since 1956, when a Bolivian threw a stone at the painting, damaging the painting where the left elbow is depicted.
Since 2005, the painting has been protected by bulletproof glass.
In 2009, a woman threw an empty teacup at the painting, scratching a small mark in the glass.
