A black felt stitch of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) has fetched $2.1 million at auction in Paris.
Initially, auction house Drouot expected to get between 600,000 and 800,000 euros for the ‘bicorne’, a two-pointed hat. But soon the bids rose much higher. Napoleon had several of these characteristic hats.
This copy has surpassed the proceeds of a previous auction, from 2014, when a similar headgear fetched 1.8 million dollars.
The hat was worn from back to front in the 18th and 19th centuries, but Napoleon wore it from left to right; in battle. This made the commander more visible to his troops on the battlefield during the many campaigns he undertook in his life.
The wide black hat is one of the few that have survived, and was auctioned because its owner, a collector, passed away. The new owner has not been announced.
