The images of Alexis Jandard’s spectacular fall under the gaze of French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday went viral, as did the ironic explanations offered by the French diver.
Alexis Jandard was participating in a diving demonstration when he slipped on the diving board before falling backwards into the water.
“Thanks to everyone for your support. For your information, my back is fine, but my ego… It was the worst time for this to happen to me, but I take it as a joke.”, Jandard mentioned with a laugh, that he even crossed paths with the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, who was present at the event. “I slipped, boss,” was the message to the French president.
Both he and his teammates Gwendal Bisch and Jules Bouyer, present in the iron event, will compete in the Olympic Games to be held in a few weeks in the French capital.
By the way, this mishap will not prevent Jandard from competing in the Olympic Games, where he will seek to get on the podium for the first time after having witnessed Tokyo 2020, obtaining 16th place in the 3-meter springboard event.
“We know our discipline. We know what causes it. We know that these are things that can happen. In the eyes of the general public it may seem impressive, a little ridiculous, but for us these are things that happen. There is always a risk. It had to happen in front of Mr. President and in front of all of France. We chose our right moment, I think,” was another of his ironic phrases.
“What happened was just stupid. I reached for my support and my leg gave way. I didn’t slip or anything. Then I fell on the board. It is non-slip and also the board was new, beautiful and I think my back is still on the board. Small risks. Plus it was live so obviously we ended up like that. It’s a shame, but it’s funny. When you take a step back, it’s funny,” he expressed in an interview.
Jandard was also a medalist at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary (silver in mixed team), and in Fukuoka, Japan (bronze in synchronized 3-meter springboard).
