French Clubs Break Records with 270 Million Euros Spent on International Transfers

This winter, French clubs have spared no expense… According to the report on international transfers published by Fifa, Ligue 1 teams have put their hands into their wallets to the tune of around 270 million euros to strengthen in the winter transfer window.

An amount doubled, and even a little more than doubled, compared to the total sums spent by French teams a year ago during the same period (+ 121.1%). It is also the first time since 2017 that English teams, who spent “only” 170 million euros, are not at the top of the ranking.

In the other direction, Brazil received the most transfer fees (around 233 million euros). Some 4,716 transactions were recorded globally for a total sum of 1.35 billion euros, down 8.2% compared to January 2023, which still represents the second highest total of the story for a winter transfer window.

For women’s teams, a new record was broken with 1.94 million euros spent in January 2024, an increase of 165.5% compared to last year.

The three top spending clubs were Lyon (55 million euros), PSG (42) and Rennes (26.5). For once, Paris (which bought the Brazilians Beraldo and Moscardo, left on loan to Corinthians) represents only a fifth of L1 expenses.

Last summer, Ligue 1 had already broken its record by raising 913 million euros, almost as much as Saudi Arabia (949 million euros).
